Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... today we are going to talk about one of the most haunting questions out there? Why am I alive? Why did I live? Why did I survive what is obviously the most horrible thing that could have happened to me? Let me start by saying no matter what you think has befallen you I can say I have seen worse,
As a health care professional I have seen the very best in people... the things that defy explanation in actions and feats. I have also experienced and witnessed the worst of the worst. Just when I think I’ve seen it all I am challenged anew. To get out of my own head, anger, and frustration and open myself to new vistas.
How do you define or picture a vista.. in your mind... a mountain top... usually it is a pleasant view or thought... I wrote a song years ago that talked about climbing mountains and being on top... and the challenge that I saw and wrote about was that life and growth happened in the valleys. I realize I’m getting a little heavy and thoughtful here but isn’t that what makes us different from other creatures... our ability to think, process things... not just “feelings” or emotions.... which are deceptive.... thoughts!
Let’s face it, there is always someone who has it worse than we do... I know recently I shared online a habit that I forced myself to adopt years ago! Every night I think through the day and identify one thing I am grateful for.... notice I said grateful and not happy... grateful implies I am appreciative, not necessarily happy... it means I have chosen to see this one thing for the cause and effect that it has had on me... my life. It may have been that... I went 1 day without being incontinent, I have a child in my life, I survived another day... anything. I identify one thing! It helps me maintain perspective. Without proper perspective everything looks too big... unobtainable, too much, too far, too..... fill in the blank! I have one challenge for you... live... it’s that simple choose to live., not merely exist! Do something, if you can’t ... then say something ... to someone ... something that will encourage them, uplift them, inspire them... provide hope, perspective, and focus.
Let’s face it we can all exist in ourselves, alone, depressed, focused on how bad we have it but it takes real strength to choose to live outside of what we might see as our physical limitations and live through others, give to others the one thing that we have... our heart, our hope, our dreams...
Let’s face it there will always be someone more capable, stronger, taller, better in so many ways... we all have limitations... but some of us have chosen to access others... their strengths, their abilities, their contacts, you know a while back while in China I was asked to talk to a group of teachers about what they call in China... “guanxi”... it’s a very interesting concept... it’s a connection, power, and integrity...
I began by having one teacher stand and link hands (form a connection) with another person their that they relied on... and then the next person.... and so on. Finally the entire group was connected and I pointed out that the first person was connected or had “guanxi” with the last... they had a bond, a connection...
Now in the states we are famous for talking about “six degrees” or levels to someone... why do we limit it mentally? We are all connected someway! I know we marvel and often exclaim wonder if we are married to someone... a shirttail relative or are a “connected” in some different way... hometown, employer, military service, state, nation, race, religion.... see... perspective!
We are often too quick to form barriers... mental barriers! I pray that you will see and understand your power inside, your potential apart from some “event” that occurred. Share this podcast with just one other individual you care about... challenge them to listen and see themselves as they truly are. Awesome! Choose to make a positive difference in this world.
