Welcome back to the “Healthy Life” podcast. Today let’s talk about something called “quiet time.” To many out there you may know of the concept to others, you may have no idea of what I’m speaking about. So let’s unwrap it and help you all to understand why this is so critical.
The concept of a quiet time is a time set aside for things like prayer, meditation, reading, expanding our hearts and mind... looking both outside of ourselves and inside ourselves. It is important to realize that your mind set has more to do with your health and ability to heal.
It is critical that you take time each day to set your mind and heart! This is critical! Years ago on my first job I was to wash and repack instruments for surgery and also tasked with checking calibration on “autoclaves” (sterilizers) in surgery and replacing the circular graph paper that would document and record the time and temperatures of these “autoclaves” as they functioned each day. If they were not set correctly we’d have no assurance that they were functioning properly. Think about it... would you want someone operating on you with non-sterile and/or dirty instruments? No!
But we think nothing of it when we start each day with either garbage filled minds or negative thoughts filled with doubt or disbelief. My staff, family, and friends know I say repeatedly (I’ve been accused of preaching this) attitude is everything! It’s important then that first thing each day we determine and set this! Calibrate our hearts and minds to this reality.
This is why I feel it is so important to carve out time at the beginning of each day to do this! Your day, your future, isn’t determined by the position or condition of your body but by the condition and position of your heart and mind. I have mentioned my mentor “Joe Batten” before but he spent his life studying people and he found that gratitude and depression could not co-exist. When you are grateful you are allowing your heart and mind to acknowledge the correct position for recalibration and setting our day! Years ago I wrote a song and even I as an 18 year old saw the importance of attitude in our daily life.
When I entered in to a restoration program 15 years ago I knew I had to be “all in.” In other words I needed to be focused on the positive, looking for and expecting positive change, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. I felt this was my last and best hope. I confess that for years I wallowed in self pity and suffering. Blaming others for my condition and the physical challenges I faced. When I chose to enter into an opportunity for rehabilitation and healing I began to understand the importance of utilizing a “quiet time” each day to realign my heart and mind... it’s interesting to consider that I had to come to China to understand the importance of attitude in my healing.
I’ll never forget the day in China that a doctor came into my room and talked to me for close to two hours. When I finally suggested that, although I enjoyed her visit immensely, I thought she had other patients to see that I learned why she was there... I had received a call that morning from home that our 3 year old dog had died unexpectedly and my 10 year old son was devastated. That’s why she was there... she was concerned that I too would be upset. They understood with TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) our emotional condition and healing with TCM were integrally connected.
It was then I determined to give attitude and gratitude utmost importance in my life an I have been richly rewarded. By setting aside time and correctly calibrating my life I position my mind and body to receive the best. If you haven’t guessed I am a believer in God and pray. I don’t say this to offend anyone but instead to educate. I would hope that educated individuals would come to this conclusion but it is up to the individual. I had a cardiology instructor in my paramedic class who said anyone who can study the sodium/potassium pump in the body and throw out a creator needs to think again!
So consider devoting time each day to getting calibrated or “right with the world” put your heart and mind in the right position. And determine to invest your time in finding and focusing on good. It is healing for the body.
