Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... you know after our stroke we tend to see all of our personal losses up close and ever expanding. A lot of who we thought we were has been impacted and we and those closest to us are being forced into dealing with a “new” realized reality. I picked up on a post made yesterday by a gal who had recently experienced a stroke and who’s daughter thought her mom was just “acting” like a victim.... wow.... so much to say and where do I start?
I want to talk to the stroke survivor first and suggest that she hold her thoughts and feelings for a bit. Why? Because nothing that she said would have any good effect. She is a victim... we all get that... but saying it to someone else doesn’t mean they’ll hear it or understand it rightly. In fact they will probably misunderstand and use our comment against us.
No one understands a stroke like another stroke survivor... but if you share... share to get answers ...not “people on your side” and whatever happens never tell someone they don’t understand! That’s like waving a red cape to a bull! Our challenge that is front and center is ...recovery and restoration not merely surviving and existing. Although I knew this in my head it took a bit to be able to translate that thought into reality.
So what does it take? I guarantee that people who listen to this podcast are at all levels in their recovery and unfortunately there are many who have just given up.
We need to start by ...
When assessing affects of the stroke this is where you list all deficits that will fall into one of three areas;
I do not expect you to triage recoverability at this point, simply list the challenges you are dealing with. Often those who are tasked with our rehab are operating with their own methods of triaging, what is of importance to them... not necessarily you. It is critical no matter how... or what you’ve been told, to put that aside and think for yourself... what you want to see fixed! I’m almost 20 years post stroke& I can tell you the ability to see what we want to change is great... but seeing it happen is often much slower.
Accept that you had the stroke... verbalize it to yourself... but also understand that you can in time with effort get most all of it back. Don’t listen to the “experts, therapists, or doctors... it’s not there life! Believe me when I say that I’ve talked to those who have been affected by stroke.... personally... they’re very different ... if I can get passed the attitude of superiority I can make a lot of progress. But it is slow and requires commitment and determination.
If you have that and are willing to commit to restoring your body then you are halfway there.
General areas to be evaluated are:
Physical challenges will be broken down further into seven areas:
The last thing to consider is financial standing or ability. You noticed I talk about finances not insurance. I guess that is because I found that insurance covers very little when it comes to effective rehab. I had great insurance and was able to “get a lot of time” but my actual changes, healing and advances were made without it!
You can evaluate what insurance covers but in dealing with thousands of stroke survivors throughout the world.... all of them made the difference themselves! Because I don’t want to shortchange anyone... I will be laying out the main challenges and guide to rehab over the next two podcasts... share this podcast with any and all that want more and are not satisfied. It’s never too late until you convince yourself to give up.
