Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... Today we will talk about the need for rehabilitation and what choices we have. You know I am a believer that the sooner you work on things the faster they return... but... it is imperative to begin and continue the healing process and not inadvertently put it off by falling into the trap of managed care.
Unfortunately we are in a system that even those seeking the best on behalf of the patient end up dealing with and in, a convoluted system that benefits the money changers and not the patients (who are the end line consumers and customers). Those who fall into the trap of thinking medical insurance is equal to medical care are gravely mistaken! By gravely I mean it will be the death of them if they fall ill.
So to those that think that medical care is care, can also be done in. Medical care is most often managed medical care which is determined to be the most accepted care available at that time for the money deemed usable for the given disease. Often times that care has been determined far from the patient and what they are offered is what is “affordable or covered” under their “plan.
The needs are just determined by the diagnosis that’s made. And what “face value” or importance the disease has been assigned. Unfortunately stroke is not a “pretty disease,” in other words, kids are not un-proportionately effected, disfigurement or drooping is often a result, dragging legs or wheelchairs are common... let’s face it following a stroke most of us looked quite bizarre with all those tubes hanging out. I didn’t realize it until I spoke to the chief medical officer of the largest insurance company in the US... that their motivation was not the client or patient in this case.... it was money and perception.
I do not have to tell you that most of us would do anything to get things back to our pre-stroke condition. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen for most. When you suffer a stroke or any medical emergency things happen! And unfortunately one of the first and most important questions that is asked is...who is your insurer and what coverage do you have? This categorizes us and determines which fork in the road we are sent down. Our future and our choices are pretty much decided at that point.
So what’s the option before me now... how can I improve, what real choices do I have? The first question I would ask is this.
You can see I’m addressing everything as a condition of healing... the body’s overall health
In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health with a phrase: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
It’s amazing to realize that by using that definition there are far more unhealthy people around us in so many ways. We, however, need to focus on our physical health and unfortunately I will be blatantly obvious here and let you know that what you don’t choose to heal and fix today will be your nightmare tomorrow. Often times we just get ‘tired” or “complacent” with the status quo... it will come back to haunt you if you bury it or push it off.
I’m often asked how much can I get back? Realistically? Why not everything... I’m being truthful... why not? Unless you have had something surgically removed or changed... you can get back what disease has effected. But... I might add... what is your expectation, because you will only get back what you truly expect and allow!
