Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... how long does it take? Well many physicians will tell you what you don’t see after 6 weeks to 6 months is all that you will ever see... I’ll bet you’ve figured out I do not believe a word. Why? Because I didn’t begin to see healing until I went to China (3 years after my stroke) and unlocked several healing mechanisms within my own body. Even the Chinese doctors at the time were a bit skeptical as to how much they could restore after such a period of time had passed.
My healing and subsequent restoration taught both me and them several exciting things.
We learned a lot about the healing properties of the body. Although the first 6 months used to be considered the sequela of stroke in which the most restoration could occur, my treatment experience opened up new venues and possibilities that had not previously been considered. Through the application of TCM techniques they found that the body could be triggered to “restart” the bodies own healing process. Often our body is forced into certain behaviors without healing occurring. Many times medications create effects... this appears good at first but after years medication doses need to be increased to obtain the same effect. But keep in mind this is still a cause and affect cycle. Stop the drug and the affect goes away. No healing occurs.
Our bodies are designed to heal but that healing is actually often prevented by medications. I found after going to China I was able to discontinue all but one medication and that one was reduced to such a level that it has little impact. I unlocked several healing mechanisms and discovered that the most things can be stimulated and accomplished naturally.
So how long does it take to heal? I found that our body communication (cellular communication) needs to be restored and those data pathways must be rebuilt before healing and proper movement can be attained. We want to,... and often push movement before healing, we are impatient and utilize AFO’s and braces or ... just relegate body parts to being beyond hope. I found that Chinese TCM is a “complete” medical form of treatment and very different and unique from acupuncture practiced in the states. TCM accelerates and channels the healing process within the body. I found that things I had struggled with for years with began to heal within months and I regained feeling, movement, and control within the year! My physician, who had patted me on the back and verbalized she thought I was just “enjoying” an extended vacation, had to admit the change and agreed that the changes she saw were obvious and borderline miraculous.
If I didn’t know how to reproduce it... I would call it a miracle too. But I have learned first hand not to give up and you can get it back! The time required is up to you! I can tell you how to speed things up and get things back more quickly but for those who feel they are limited then there are answers but time required is increased greatly.
I recently saw x-rays of a foot of a stroke survivor that had to be treated with surgery 5 years after a great PT and use of an AFO. I realized that I had made choices years ago that I look back on and am thrilled with the decision I made then. That probably is one of the big reasons I am verbal now. I was offered an AFO by my doctors and therapist days after my stroke. It was determined then I suffered from drop foot and pronation problems. I chose then not to use the AFO and instead to spend copious amounts of time and energy to work on and build up foot and ankle muscles from the moment I got home. The doctor and therapist warned me against it but I stuck to my decision. Did it mean going slow? Yes! A lot of work? Yes! For a period of time. But I had learned firsthand from an orthopedic surgeon to do what I could naturally before I gave up or gave in. He knew once the original body part was forced into a brace That sooner or later he would need to perform surgery and the limb would never be the same. I was fortunate, I knew what would happen. So I’m saying it here... think long and hard about your options, don’t let someone force you into a situation that is “good for them”, try not to be naive about treatment options and facilities... they ALL have something to gain... money! Your choices and decisions will be looked at later in life as wise, foolish, revolutionary, life changing, or resignation. Make the best choice!
