Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... I recently had someone make a statement that challenged me? They said that medications have increased the likelihood of surviving a stroke and should always be used. This reminded me of an interview that I had with one of the leading stroke physicians in the US. We were talking about strokes, treatments, survivability, and lasting effects. “Lasting effects and outcomes” he replied, “now you are talking about the seldom discussed reality.” I shared with him that I found, that when I worked as a paramedic and then in surgery, I was surprised at the injuries that the body could sustain and continue to function.
`Function’, was the cryptic word here, because it implies existence in a physically functioning manner but it does not go on to express the actual way in which that individual is functioning after treatment and what if any disabilities exist as a result of the illness or injury. The little talked about fact was, he said, that western medications, treatments, and surgeries can prolong life (existence) but they have little, if any, impact on the quality of the life that remains. Wow! Here was a leader in the stroke world sharing this...
Ok let me be a bit frank here and I apologize if you are offended but I am going to talk very openly. A while back a doctor friend of mine that said he could effectively kill all cancer in the body! Remarkable I replied, you’ll have to publish this! It’s exciting! I don’t think so was his reply... I asked why not? Because he said, I can kill the cancer... but the patient will die too! I don’t think anyone wants this result. He was right... just as that leading stroke doctor was right. The cure or the medical answers provided have to be justified regarding the result or impact that it provides.
Unfortunately we have been trained to accept many things at face value. Or so we are told... “All Medications are always helpful and western medicine has the best answers for disease.” Did you know the first heart transplant was done in South Africa (The first human heart transplant was performed on Dec. 3, 1967, when a South African surgeon, named Christian Bernard operated on 53-year-old Louis Washkansky.) , LASIK eye surgery was developed in France, and the best stroke restoration is in China with traditional Chinese medicine.
Please don’t misunderstand me.... medications are critical and save lives... but I have found after 20 years working with stroke survivors the best thing I can say is “the most expensive medicine practiced is in the US.” Regarding society or social media and the internet... I did some very easy research and uncovered something... I wanted to know the currents top 5 causes of death...
Multiple sites said...
Ok. Stroke slipped to number 7... What wasn’t reported were the numbers...further research showed that 610,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. every year and the real shocker came when I did more in-depth research and found that ... 783,936 annual deaths\what... that wasn’t listed?) came from conventional medicine mistakes, approximately 106,000 of those are the result of prescription drug use . According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, two-hundred and ninety people in the United States are killed by prescription drugs every day.
Now I agree that stroke death has dropped from the nation’s fourth-leading cause of death to... according to this site ... the 5th. Still, 142,142 people died of a stroke in 2016. It also used to be considered the number one cause of disability... now research shows....
Strokes rank no. 9 now....behind pregnancy... well I beg to differ... I’ve dealt with both.. pregnancy 3 times and it didn’t hold a candle to stroke. Strokes do appear to be the leading cause of long-term disability. But this only demonstrates how statistics are managed and massaged to get what is “desired” or acceptable in searches. Trust me it was still hard to find that hidden fact... I did more intense digging on prescribed medicine too because I practiced in medicine for 20 years and know what is typically from searching eyes.
I firmly believe medications, used properly save lives and need to be utilized... but our bodies are not designed to handle them for long periods of time so you always need to find other methods if ever possible. My doctor and I worked diligently over years and now I no longer have dozens of prescriptions that I manage... but just one! I encourage everyone to be informed and work at regaining their health! We have only one body and we need to protect it vigorously. Use medications when that’s all that works but find other approaches and answers too. The “moral to this story”.... stay informed about your health and doubt many things you hear online until you can substantiate them...
