Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast. The question we’ll deal with today is; “How do we find the inner strength to keep going and the ability to fight to regain our life after experiencing a catastrophic event or illness?’ This is a daunting question and critical in the first months following a stroke. I can not tell you how many posts I read daily where it is obvious that the person posting is struggling with this very issue. I can see and feel the struggle. They are being ask to try and believe when basic things seem impossible!
Here I’m going to quote a line from the movie “Ever-after” staring Drew Barrymore... “just breathe!”
Survival requires us to take a step back and do just that... just breathe.... take a breath and slow down. Often when we get upset or down it’s because things are skewed and we don’t see things from the proper perspective. We can act hurriedly...over inflate the importance of things and as a result do not always see things correctly. I understand how after our stroke we can feel those effects and feel as if all our hopes and dreams are gone... but they’re not gone.... changed... yes... but not gone. We can have new goals and new visions. New hopes and dreams that supersede anything we ever thought possible. I struggled with expressive aphasia and was afraid I’d never speak properly again... now I host a podcast... who would have thought it possible.
But... we can’t do it alone! I know we think that at times...that we’re all alone... but it’s important.... no... necessary, to have someone who will support you... not just help monetarily, someone who will hold your hand, share your tears, lift you up when you’re down and be there during happy and sad times. At the same time we need to be committed to remaining grateful even during the worst or scariest times... admit it! Share it... own it! I keep a journal... I call an “Attitude of Gratitude” journal that I write in daily... not a lot just something that I can be grateful for at that time. In the moment as it were. I feel so strongly about this I’m making it part of the “DO” app. Then when I’m down or tempted to feel low I can look over all those things that I have to be grateful for.
You know it’s impossible to be up all the time but it’s also important to remember that we only hurt ourselves physically and emotionally when we are down. Up to now I have listed 3 things to do in order to improve our outlook... they are...
But what about now... how could I overcome mentally when I was impaired physically? The stroke not only impaired my function but affected all feeling on one side. It meant that out of sight really was out of mind. I had no idea, for instance, if my hand dropped and was tangled in my wheelchair wheels. I had to make a recovery plan that took this challenge to heart. There were things that I could do and other things that were completely out of the question. Most rehab is broken down to three areas:
Due to my physical losses and aphasia I quickly exceeded my insurance authorized treatment in these areas without making great headway. I found I needed to depend greatly on the first three things I mentioned: slowing down, my support system and my gratitude journal!
I then had to think outside the box and find answers where I was told there were none.
It was this that got me through the worst. I had been told by so many well meaning medical professionals and doctors that little would return.... don’t believe it! Your determination, consistency, and perseverance will exceed their expectations greatly... after all it’s not them who was effected... it was you! Trust me... when the doctors suffer a stroke... I’m on their speed dial!
Well that’s all our time today... thanks for joining me and talking about getting through the worst... I hope you’ll join us tomorrow!
