Welcome back to the “Healthy Life” podcast. I will continue where I left off yesterday regarding healing. As I reminded you yesterday that our bodies are designed to heal! I mentioned drugs and poor choices that can often interfere with healing and I’d like to address that in more detail. When someone experiences a stroke the are often prescribed a myriad of medications and many things are often assumed and have to be disproved, I understand the theory and sometimes the rapid reach that physicians feel they must make to cover themselves legally.
When I suffered my bleed in the pons area of my brain stem it was thought I’d die within 24 hours. After all I was only 42 with 3 kids at home and no history to speak of but it was assumed because of my age that I must have heart disease, be a diabetic and because it was a bleed I was thought to be hypertensive too! Over a dozen medications were prescribed and given.
Not only did I not have any of these underling issues but the medications prescribed reeked havoc with my body, created multiple health problems and slowed my healing process. When I finally checked myself out of the hospital over a month later, the list of meds increased and the doses increased too! I was forceful and obnoxious enough to sign documents and refused them, choosing instead to speak with my doctor at home. Together we decided on 6 meds and scaled that back to 3 over the next 3 months. As of today I take Only 1 medication and work with a nutritionist and added a multi-mineral and magnesium!
We do heal and many of those medications that were originally ordered did initially interfere with that healing. It wasn’t until three years post stroke that I headed overseas to China to undergo a dramatic and controlled treatment and rehabilitation therapy regime. I was at my wits end and was willing to try this to get anything back. Keep in mind this was three years post stroke... completely beyond any hope that western medicine offered.
I alluded to learning how to rest yesterday... the first time that was mentioned to me was as I received my first acupuncture treatment in China. It was totally different than anything I had experienced in the US. The needling was different, the depth, the angle, the needle manipulation was all very different. But then in the middle of this I was told to rest! Calm my mind, physically relax my body and let the needles work.
This concept was somewhat familiar but here they wanted me to shift or transition from focusing on the needles, the treatments and instead rest my body and mind and open the “channels within my body” so that the treatments could have the best result. In fact for 1 month I was not allowed to do any forms of exercise, leave my room, or even bathe myself. Talk about challenging and a bit humbling.
Over the next weeks I learned how to breathe and relax to the point that the needles would go in and I would physically fall asleep for 20 minutes. As a result I saw, experienced, and felt feeling returning, movement returning and control returning. Three years post stroke and I saw the results of healing occurring in my body years after I thought all hope had been extinguished.
So when someone questions if healing can occur after or even long after the stroke I reply with a resounding yes! The body is a remarkable creation and was designed to heal itself if provided with the correct tools ?. The elephant in the room and the things we fail to realize, acknowledge, or utilize ... are those tools. It is a combination of our diet (what we use as fuel for the body), our exercise (the ways we maintain and strengthen the body), our sleep (how we recharge the body), rest (how we energize the body), and our attitude (what we say internally to and about ourselves).
If you are not experiencing the healing that you want... please do not give up or give in. You may be looking in the wrong directions or asking the wrong questions. There is so much that is not known or understood regarding a stroke and so much that we are learning everyday. I have spent a lifetime in the medical community and the one thing that continually amazes me is how much the people you depend on for medical answers don’t know. The fact remains they don’t know what they don’t know.... only what they have been taught or experienced.
Well unfortunately that’s all the time we have for today ... I’m so glad we got to continue our talk about healing the brain ...and body for that matter... thanks for joining me today and I look forward to sharing with you next week, ...please feel free to leave me a message at stroke.global or on Facebook @stroke.global, I enjoy seeing them all.
