Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... Today we will continue talking about managed care and healing. Now I know that many if not most of you will be told that the damage that the stroke did cannot be undone or if it can be affected, only slightly. This is done to lower expectations! I do not need to repeat all the negative things you have heard. The fact is that the body does heal! But it needs the materials to do so.
Think about it... the bill of materials (list - for you non-woodworkers) for a 1 story - 2 bedroom basic house is different than what is needed for a 2 story - 5 bedroom luxury home. If a hurricane wiped out both homes the repair or restoration would be different. I point this out because no 2 people or strokes are the same but you still need raw materials to repair.
Materials! Not just drugs and time. In fact drugs can often have a detrimental effect on healing. Trust me you want the best contractor for repairs... just as you want the best individual handling your healing and restoration. If your doctor doesn’t think you can heal you need a new doctor! This is probably why I speak to my nutritionist more often than my doctor.... she knows more about creating a healthy body.
I devote my time to TCM Restoration, who only sees 30 clients per year... why only 30 you might ask... well it’s because they focus on the individuals needs, their healing, establishing habits, and treatments! They only have 10 clients in their program at one time... and only run 3 sessions per year.
But... I hear... I can’t go to China... what can I do now? The reality is because they only invite 30 people each year into their program the fact is most won’t! For those you need to begin and maintain the healing process. I am amazed how many people are not healed and the process in their lives has stopped. I will be interviewing my nutritionist beginning tomorrow to talk about a “healing diet”. And what can be done to kickstart the process. But in addition to providing the correct materials they have to be utilized in the right way and in the right order.
It does no good to get the cart before the horse... it will go nowhere. I have personally seen so many types of “rehab” that are forced on stroke survivors at the wrong time... I remember having my affected hand thrust into a tub filled with something that resembled pencil eraser shavings... also in this tub were bolts. The idea was to feel around and grab the bolt. Would be great if you had feeling or movement... I had neither. I was forced to use my unaffected hand to grab my affected hand and drag it through the bucket. Because I had no feeling or grasp... the only bolts found were those that “surfaced” during the “drag process”.
I share this story to reiterate the need for things in a logical order... not one determined by the “book” plan but the clients needs! I use the word client here specifically because we are no longer “patients”. We stopped being patients the day we left the hospital. I’m from a small town in Iowa but we have at least four businesses devoted to rehab in our little town of 25,000. And I’ve never seen them empty! I know that most individuals who have strokes get from 10 to 90 sessions per year with insurance picking up most costs (typically an 80/20 rate) depending upon results. Anything else and the cost is usually borne by the individual.
I cannot overstate the importance of stimulation and association that must be built up and connections reestablished in the brain. This is why Chinese TCM is so good. It speeds up the re-connection process considerably. The US acupuncture is limited. I often use recipes as an example... just because eggs, water and salt are in a cake if you lack the other ingredients you’ll only get watery, salty eggs! So too Chinese TCM is much like the cake and the US option... the watery eggs...
Can people improve without Chinese TCM... yes but it takes a much longer time. Years in fact! But with determination and consistency and the right focus it can be done. Why do you think I’ve been going to the effort to build an app and offer a podcast. I realize not everyone will want to go to get restored or choose to commit to the TCM Restoration program. Online, smart phone, and iPad options were not available years ago... Facebook hadn’t even been invented! I am working diligently to outline exercises weekly here in the podcast and will make more available in the DO app. (There will be a limited number that will reside on our website. I do not use YouTube because I’ve heard too many stories of videos either disappearing or being blocked.)
I will preach and teach restoration as long as I’m able and I welcome comments, questions, and suggestions. This is not just “my” podcast but yours too... Well that’s all our time for today... thanks for joining me today as we talked about health and healing ! I really look forward to tomorrow’s podcast where I get to talk with my nutritionist...Jodelle about a healing diet... please feel free to leave me a message at stroke.global or on Facebook @stroke.global.
It has been a pleasure sharing today and I hope you’ve enjoyed this podcast... we keep it brief so it’s easy to add to your day... we want to thank our sponsor TCM Restoration for helping us provide this venue. Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast... Today we will talk about the need for rehabilitation and what choices we have. You know I am a believer that the sooner you work on things the faster they return... but... it is imperative to begin and continue the healing process and not inadvertently put it off by falling into the trap of managed care.
Unfortunately we are in a system that even those seeking the best on behalf of the patient end up dealing with and in, a convoluted system that benefits the money changers and not the patients (who are the end line consumers and customers). Those who fall into the trap of thinking medical insurance is equal to medical care are gravely mistaken! By gravely I mean it will be the death of them if they fall ill.
So to those that think that medical care is care, can also be done in. Medical care is most often managed medical care which is determined to be the most accepted care available at that time for the money deemed usable for the given disease. Often times that care has been determined far from the patient and what they are offered is what is “affordable or covered” under their “plan.
The needs are just determined by the diagnosis that’s made. And what “face value” or importance the disease has been assigned. Unfortunately stroke is not a “pretty disease,” in other words, kids are not un-proportionately effected, disfigurement or drooping is often a result, dragging legs or wheelchairs are common... let’s face it following a stroke most of us looked quite bizarre with all those tubes hanging out. I didn’t realize it until I spoke to the chief medical officer of the largest insurance company in the US... that their motivation was not the client or patient in this case.... it was money and perception.
I do not have to tell you that most of us would do anything to get things back to our pre-stroke condition. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen for most. When you suffer a stroke or any medical emergency things happen! And unfortunately one of the first and most important questions that is asked is...who is your insurer and what coverage do you have? This categorizes us and determines which fork in the road we are sent down. Our future and our choices are pretty much decided at that point.
So what’s the option before me now... how can I improve, what real choices do I have? The first question I would ask is this.
You can see I’m addressing everything as a condition of healing... the body’s overall health
In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health with a phrase: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
It’s amazing to realize that by using that definition there are far more unhealthy people around us in so many ways. We, however, need to focus on our physical health and unfortunately I will be blatantly obvious here and let you know that what you don’t choose to heal and fix today will be your nightmare tomorrow. Often times we just get ‘tired” or “complacent” with the status quo... it will come back to haunt you if you bury it or push it off.
I’m often asked how much can I get back? Realistically? Why not everything... I’m being truthful... why not? Unless you have had something surgically removed or changed... you can get back what disease has effected. But... I might add... what is your expectation, because you will only get back what you truly expect and allow!
Well that’s all our time today... thanks for joining me today as we talked about health and we are on a roll so I’ll pick up here tomorrow ! I really look forward to continuing with this topic more...please feel free to leave me a message at stroke.global or on Facebook @stroke.global.
