Welcome back to the Healthy Life Podcast.. as a stroke survivor we have unfortunately been ushered in to the “pre-existing” conditions list. Whereas you may have felt as if you were healthy before the stroke... now you’re damaged goods. Please don’t limit yourself and what you think you can regain. At this time you need to dig deep within and determine in your heart and mind that you are not only a survivor but also an overcomer!
We are often surrounded by well meaning individuals that attempt to lower our expectations to “protect” us from being discouraged. I can honestly say within days of surviving my stroke I had reached rock bottom and I’ve been gaining internal strength ever since. Sure... I’d be lying if I said there haven’t been down days... days where I’m frustrated emotionally and struggled physically... but I’ve always had a plan to overcome. I have established a few close friends that I can vent to.
It’s critical to plan for those days while working to become your best. Now I’m assuming a lot here... that you desire and are actively working at being your best! I hope that prior to your “event” you were focused on that already. It’s not something that you just jump into. That’s why restoration and healing can and usually are obvious goals. In fact, we have to have our goals lowered to remain content with accepting less than our best. After all we don’t want to dream or desire normalcy... well isn’t that what well meaning “friends” do.... lower the standards... encourage contentment so that we will be quiet and complacent.
I must confess that stroke survivors struggle with “complaining” and our relationships often devolve and fall apart. It is imperative then that we make ourselves aware of this fatal flaw that often comes with stroke. It’s for this reason that we must understand what makes up a healthy body and healthy living. Too often people who have suffered from stroke are not really focused on anything but the “physical” restoration... they subject the mental and spiritual to the lessor category and as such devote less time to those areas.
That is unfortunate because the body is a balance and it is important to apply energy to each of these areas. Improving that “data stream” will improve mental acuity and strengthen our mental health. Having that spiritual support will also assist in healing!
It’s critical that we see ourselves as always improving, growing and changing rather than broken beyond repair and unfixable. If we don’t have plans in how to handle frustrations we will struggle. I will guarantee that your stroke will affect relationships and people who depended on your acting or being able to do specific things.
Unfortunately I found that my stroke uncovered and brought to light those people in my life that were “fare weather” friends and they slowly faded and disappeared in their engagements with me. I also found that I needed to be aware of how and when I expressed things. It was easy to adopt a negative outlook and depress relationship development. I found a new need to assess myself regularly to make certain I was not overly negative.
Amazingly pre-stroke it wasn’t an issue but post stroke it was a big one. I understand the struggles that we face and the daily reminders of the differences and challenges that I was now dealing with. But I also understood that I had an opportunity to learn about my new habits and tendencies and interrupt the negative tendencies and share with others to help them in seeing and dealing with them. Our plans and how we deal with our lives post stroke stroke is critical and will make restoration and healing possible! We become what we envision becoming... we are our own self fulfilling prophecy.
